| ECONOMIC INDICATORS |
- The average unemployment rate in the Monroe area, as of April 2001, stands at 5.2 percent.
- Area bankruptcy figures have decreased, mirroring national statistics. Figures reflect a 10% drop with business bankruptcies (21% decrease) as well as a 10% drop in personal bankruptcies.
- The La. Dept. of Economic Development released figures showing that Ouachita Parish was ranked 3rd in the state in terms of both new and total economic development projects put in place during 1999 and was exceeded in value only by Orleans and Jefferson parishes.

| CONSTRUCTION |
- Total construction in the metropolitan area was greater in 1999 than in any year previously recorded as record numbers of residential and commercial/institutional structures were built. Total area new construction, excluding over $20 million for the library at the University of La. at Monroe, almost reached $119 million!
- Construction of note in the twin cities included a school and mini-warehouse, several office buildings, two hotels, several grocery stores, a sizeable addition to the Monroe Civic Center, and a new & expanded Convention and Visitors bureau.
- Extensive activity is also underway or planned for both the air industrial park and many street and access improvements, including a loop around Monroe.
West Monroe is also anxiously awaiting completion of the massive rebuilding and improvement of Warren Drive, which will interconnect the major transportation arteries of Arkansas Rd. and Cypress St. to Thomas St & I-20. Work is also beginning on the recently developed industrial park.
- Residential units were up some 91 permits (25%). Residential inventory grew in value over $12 million (33%). Commercial/institutional units were up 28 permits (24%). Inventory grew over $25 million (68%). Total construction units were up 119 permits (25%), with total inventory value growing over$37 million (46%).
- The market has gained a multitude of new businesses and advertisers in the past year including; KMC Telcom, Haverty's fine furniture, and several new 24 hour superstore locations including: Brookshires, Albertsons, Rite Aid and Eckerd.
Plus restaurants galore: Copelands, Chili's, Bennigans, Fazolis, Logan's Steak House, El Chicos, McCalister's Deli, as well as a number of new local establishments…

| RETAIL TRENDS |
- Total sales and governmental taxes which serve as a surrogate for retail sales were up almost 8% over the year providing $3 million in additional revenue for local taxing bodies.
- Residents were also willing to purchase big ticket items in 1999 since vehicle sales were up over 9% ($21.5 million) from the previous year.
- Louisiana experienced about a 4% growth in visitors in 1999 compared to a 0.7% growth in the United States.
- In 2001, the Bayou Beast became our local professional Arena Football franchise – and they are locally owned and operated!
